There is absolutely nothing wrong with earning a link from a blog post you decide to comment on. In fact, if you comment often on blogs, it is a good way to increase the amount of inbound links pointing to your site’s pages. However, there is a "right" way and a "wrong" way to go about accomplishing this.

I agree there is a right way and a wrong way of earning links by commenting on blog posts.  I think the right way is when you contribute something to the thread that is worthwhile for others to read and is consistant with the topic of the post.

I have to agree with the commentor’s that say that there’s nothing wrong with putting anchor text in your username. I have no problem giving someone a relevant link if they took the time to add to the conversation

There are proper ways to do comments posting..you just need to be extra careful on how to do it.

Some good points made by the author.    I do a lot of this kind of thing and it’s amazing how easy it gets (after you’ve done it for a while) to tell who’s just going for the SEO juice and who the real commenters are.I think the nature of this business has greatly decreased the quality of the blog, comment, and discussion board environment.    I think this the world of blogging is trending toward "localization" and by that I mean an environment where surfers will only be interested in discussing issues with individuals they have met and/or know personally at the local level.    I really think that the golden days of worldwide blogging and discussion boards (i.e. surfers get on their systems and seek out anyone they think to be interesting from anywhere in the world) are behind us.

"it’s amazing how easy it gets ... to tell who’s just going for the SEO juice and who the real commenters are."On Sphinn it is even easier, the SEO juice folk actually have the nerve to be condescending to the real commenters by openly declaring that they are here to make money, while calling the commenters mere amateurs. Of course, I would call them something else.

I’m surprised nobody talked about the NoFollow attribute given to link coming from blog comments or forums. This is quite a big topic! Concretely, any links coming from blog comments or forums have no impacts on search engine rankings, as simple as spiders won’t follow the link. (this has been invented to fight against spam). On Wordpress, we can use a plugin, to take away the Nofollow attributes, but if you check the code source of blogs, 95% of the time, every links are NoFollow, and therefore Spam is just useless. On your blog David, every links on blog comments are NoFollow. Can someone please confirm this, as I’m actually surprised nobody mention this already?
