PLEASE NOTE: This is a fresh thread replacing the old one, which is now closed. Everything from that thread that we haven't implemented has been listed below. Also see Sphinn: New Features Added for wishes we've granted. Finally, if it's a bug -- something we have on the site NOW that's not working properly -- please use the Sphinn: Known Issues And Bugs thread.
First, things that have been suggested that we are NOT doing:
Next, things that have been suggested that are on the development schedule. Items are listed in no particular order:
Email notification to participated threads would be handy.
Ajaxified comment submittal would be good.
Widgets, oops already mentioned, but yeah widgets could be a great addition. Take whats already out there and do it better, I'm sure the collective nous could come up with something kickassified
Like the idea about having to comment on thumbs down. Comments should be forced to be > > 12 chars, just to prevent 'cos its lame type' reasons.
Jagermeister dispenser :)
Tally how long you have been stalking a partcular user, so if they do not 'add you as a friend' after "x" amount of time you can stop 'stalking'.
*Danny - you have 3 more days, then I will have to cut you loose! ;)
I'd like to see the email notification of participating threads as robwatts mentioned but also an email notifiication of a new inbox message.
Not necessarily an email notification but something that alerts you to a new person stalking you - maybe that is there and I just haven't been stalked, lol.
Can you tell that I like to be notified of new things?
Better dedup functionality - and make it available to us digg is littered with duplicate submissions from different sources, prevent it before it gets bad.
Email integration similar to the sponsor level of SU.
Message System:
email alert of new Sphinn messages recieved
ability to respond through a Sphinn URL from email (especially useful w/ mobile)
email alert of friends' sphinns
subscribe to comments threads.
Sphinn Status
alert when 2 votes from going hot
alert when gone hot
alert when user's blog post (sphunn by another) goes hot. This would require using the "claimed blog" concept.
Option to see if post sphunn goes hot
Email alert when posts hit greatest hits page
Combine Comments & Who Sphunn This? pages.
I find I often want to see both of these and it seems like an extra step to have to click on the Who Sphunn This? link. If the site was faster maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
Re Better Friending
Make the friending mechanism a bit more explicit. I had no idea how to acquire friends so i just stalked people and then I didn't know that they had suddenly become my friends.

"News Story" vs "Discussion": Unfair Competition On Sphinn! http://sphinn.com/story/7388
Danny wrote "Interesting idea -- drop it into the wishlist, and we can look at it as part of development."
Thanks for asking, Danny. And here I go ;-)
=============
You might have noticed that "Discussion" submissions would seldom make it to Sphinn front page "Hot Topics", unfortunately. The reason is the inherited weakness of Spinn's rating system.
At present a submission needs to be sphunn 20 times in order to make it to "Hot Topics".
The majority of "News Story" submissions cover articles on blogs. Those articles are exposed to sphinning in two ways. They could be Sphunn by the visitors of the blogs as well as the visitors of Sphinn.com.
While "Discussion" submissions are only exposed to sphinning on Sphinn.com.
And that is an unfair competition where "News Story" submissions have much bigger chances than "Discussion" submissions to reach the "Hot Topics".
To bring a balance to the equation, Danny & co might wish to consider to lower the number of sphinns required for "Discussion" submissions to reach the "Hot Topics".
=====================
A light version of Sphinn would be great as well. Loading the 1Mb front page on my mobile phone can take up to 30-40 seconds. My unlimited mobile internet package has a maximum of 50Mb /month -yes, you read that correctly. damn you, fine print!-, which means that I can visit Sphinns home page only 50 times a month...
Filters and/or personalization: -Blogrush to filter out all those stories or a personal page with just my friends news or just my tagged interests.
Why the heck is the front page 1 MB? That seems huge.
A recho for email notifications or at least the option to set them for:
Also feeds for comments :)
[GRANTED] - The possibility to report spam submissions directly to the moderators.
I would like a space invader side game that would influence my posting power, either that or Asteroids. ;)
How about a feed like Digg has so you can track when somebody submits your site. Like this:
http://digg.com/rss_search?search=searchengineland&area=all&type=url&section=news
Harith, you can report directly to moderators now using the new contact form. The spam button we're considering would simply make it possible for the community to pause something that looks spammy if there are enough reports, and then a moderator would come in and review to decide whether to uphold or override.
Everyone else, great ideas. Keep them coming. They won't all happen at once, but the point is to keep developing and refining the site.
Danny,
Great. Thanks.
The site is VERY slow. Are you sure it's due to Pligg? I have a site running on Pligg which I don't see crawling like this one does.
Well, since I tried to post to this thread last night on my iPhone, but the form doesn't seem to be compatible with it, that would be my first wish! (I'm pretty sure it used to work before you added the formatting.)
Other wishes...
As I've already stated in previous comments, I'd like a field for article author. I know you said you weren't gonna do it, but I'm gonna keep asking for it anyway until perhaps one day you finally relent!
As others have suggested somewhere, an up and coming page would also be good. The new page is getting way too crowded with new (crappy) stuff, and a lot of good stuff gets pushed down way too fast before anyone ever sees it. I'm not sure how many pages people are willing to scroll through to find the good stuff.
That's all I can think of for now.
When modifying one's profile allow the user to enter additional sites where they have profiles.
would like to see these:
Sphinn's Discussion is a unique iteration of forums that could allow hot questions and topics to easily float to the top of the industry's consciousness. Stand out above blog posts and news articles while not being burried in a forum.
I for one can think of many discussions that should be featured prominently, well above many of the Hot Topic news items (Link bait, buying links, best agencies, best consultants, analytics platform pros/cons) - topics that change so frequently that news articles and blog posts shouldn't receive prominence for being static and "old" as soon as they hit the wires.
I'd like to see a different weight given to discussions to ensure they easily appear on Hot Topic pages and remain there longer. Perhaps instead they are simply presented separately.
I'd like to be able to bury the stories (or is the bury button already there and I have missed it?) because spammers need to face the wrath of Sphinn's bury brigade :-)
Danny,
I keep finding myself wishing that a post's position on the "What's New" page was higher based on an algorithm other than just time.
The criteria could also include how many Sphinns a post gets over time. For instance a post which garners several votes quickly could stay higher longer. This would reflect the community's affinaty for a post and keep it in play.
I think we'll see how it works with the split page, showing most Sphunn stories up top. I think that will help (plus, it's easy to do), and we can look at other ideas over time.
When you enter a URL for submitting, I'd like to see similiar stories or if the URL has already been submitted a la Digg.
Hi Danny,
Congratulations on becoming offcial.
I have a thing I'd like you to add to the wishlist:
that is to launch Japanese version of Sphinn!
There is great expectation we, Japanese webmasters could join Sphinn.

Seeing a post about Israeli markets at Sphinn caused me to try to come up with new ideas for stopping spam. I thought of the following:
1) Moderate the first (or first couple or first three) story submissions from new accounts. I don't think this would cause a big burden on either moderators or legitimate story submitters.
2) Ban the default avatar! Make a unique avatar mandatory for everyone. Make the spammer do one more extra step in order to get the account. If someone regularly participates here, I'm not sure why they would keep the default avatar anyway.
3) Everyone who has submitted a hot story should be given "spam killing" power. While I sincerely hope that nobody would use it against a legitimate story they disapprove of, perhaps this "power" should be limited to stories submitted by "newer users" (and I'd let someone else define what a new user is).
I'm sure someone suggested this already. But is there a way I can subscribe to an RSS feed of a member's comments? For example, let's say I wanted to read every single comment Vanessa Fox posts and get updates via RSS.
An RSS feed of stories either submitted or voted on by a particular member would also be cool. And if I sign up to multiple feeds, then maybe auto-delete duplicate stories.
My number request would be email notification of comments. Attention is scarce, who has time to not all submits read and commented on and return "manually"?
Fantastic job with the new features so far. Keep up the great work.
an information of what kind of avatar images to submit to get a decent small avatar image or be able to provide both sizes? I have tried several versions of my usual picture, and all of them look very bad in the small version - and I can't find an information which would be the best avatar base site to work with.
Another vote for: Email-notification of replies to threads I've commented on. Can't continue to check for responses manually.
And, while the search function can and apparently will be better in the future... it'd be a great start if you would just re-order the results to be most-recent first rather than the current oldest-first sort order. This should be a pretty easy change.
linking to sphinn stories by domain discussion per danny's request. a friends feature is also talked about in this thread. thanks danny.
I don't think this was suggested before, and if yes, then I apologise:
how about "Duplicate story" button ? Sphinn does detect when the same URL is sphinned but since a lot of the news in the SEO blogosphere gets reported by more than one source, it happens that there are several sphinns on basically the same story. Especially if it is something Matt Cutts said :)
I want threaded comments.
Regarding Sphinn Stories by Domain
While you are at that suggestion, also think about a list by "Author Name". Most blogs make use of this RSS attribute if they have multiple contributing authors. I would like to see for example Bill Slawski's post he made at SEOByTheSea.com and also the ones he made at SearchEngineLand.com.
Gamermk, we tried and decided against threaded comments for reasons covered here.
Danny have you seen this Wordpress plugin? It's called Conditional Digg Badge. It Automatically places a 'digg this' badge on any story that has greater than 10 votes. Would love to have one of these for Sphinn.
