Dipping my toe into the seo recruitment world a few prejudices have surfaced and it's created a very interesting discussion.

I was agency for a long time. While it does require a LOT more talent to work agency, it's VERY stressful...especially if you're a Director. Being in-house is a nice break to be honest, a different realm that brings different challenges but most things are pretty surface level.

As I embark on being my own boss I'm sure I'll miss the in-house world at some point.

I agree with the above - client work in my experience (SEO) it's all about billable hours and comes with stress, but also a buzz.

In-house is certainly more relaxed and you dip into many other roles which can be interesting.

Being a SEO agency outside of a one or two man band I think is really hard. As a agency you work against the costs of a office, employees, marketing yourself, managing uneducated clients, and depending on were you sit in the agency (usually flat) ladder, the cost of wasting your time under poor vision.

The best SEOs in my opinion are the ones who can brave it as a internet mountain man, alone on the frontier.
