Last week E-consultancy’s Graham Charlton took a look at Ten things Asda can do better online . What I found surprising is that neither Asda, or any of the other leading UK supermarkets, rank above #9 in Google UK for the term ’supermarket’.

Surely those results are flawed.  We all know that SEO is bogus and unneccesary. There is no reason anyone would ever need to optimize their site for the search engines.

Yes, but...search volume doesn’t equate with conversion rate. With all respect, just because "supermarket" shows a lot of traffic, doesn’t mean this traffic is in any targeted part of the sales process.

Bit weird, since supermarkets are very active in SEO, for instance ASDA  and Tesco clean up on the keywords which actually convert (insurance etc) - in contrast I don’t know anyone who would type in [supermarket] to do their shopping online.  Sounds to me the supermarkets know a lot about SEO and just don’t chase pointless keyphrases.
