From the looks of the network page, to be a top sphinner you need the most submits gone hot. Guess you have to start by working your way up the latter with comments, friends, and sphinns. In general I think for the first few months its all about building credibility and awareness. Then you can migrate to reading a lot of SEO blogs and hope your good nature from before gets your submissions hot.
I think comments are not that important. Im the top commenter in the top 20 btw. ;-)
Just like Wikipedia, I never enter Sphinn by its Front Page. And, I also never look at it either. The Hot Page is totally boring to me.What I find interesting about Sphinn is that even though so many of its users are from Europe and Down Under, all the traffic on it occurs while America is awake.
On days when I just have a few minutes I solely scan the fp.
"Copy this person" followed by a few common sense approaches does not a Great Article make. :p
