Thanks fer the Sphinn and comment Rob.... gotta love the smell of fresh RANT...he he
Especially in the morning second only to napalm!
I love it! Great rant! There's a lot of useful links and info in that post and for anyone who calls themselves a SEO, they really need to read this post and ask themselves honestly, "do I really know search?"
Rant on!
Well, the links were 1/2 being cheeky incase peeps didn't know where to look. Point is more that there are so many things to be looking at out there. And I just like whining ;0)
But we're also doing some constructive stuff such as playing with ranking flux/personalized search and more... I just see nothing but an evolution.
If peeps are gonna keep saying it's dead...dying, worthless... I am going to keep talking about the many ways it's evolving... cause it just soooooo much fun dontcha know...
Hi,
I don't contend that SEO is becoming much more analytical, mathematical, and subjective. But to call it an art, to me, both denigrates and gives the wrong perception of SEO (not to say that art itself is denigrating).
But I hope you know what I mean. Do we call biotechnology an art? Or how about things like game theory or space science?
Generally, we are either left-brain types or right-brain types; we can't be both, as SEOs. Those of us who focus on the left are generally types like you, who eat up patents and semantic-analysis-something-or-other. Those of us who favor social marketing, linkbait, and creating something different (buzzworthy) are probably more right-brain thinking.
Art is generally a function of the right brain, math and the sciences are generally left brain functions. What you describe is a science, and that does nothing to downplay it; in fact, it is function that requires the most skill and knowledge, rather than intuition.
Well as a fella with many years in both music and the martial arts (with a side of graphic design) I find that the technical is but the working knowledge as I said in the post, eluding to the punching bag; merely having tools doesn't make one an artist.
But, having a passion for something does make one artistic with the tools. Artistry can come in all forms. But if it's fame or fortune, not passion that drives a person in a given endeavor, to me that's not art.
Anyways.... as I said in the post many peeps I know in the biz that I sent the initial draft too, expressed my insanity and obsessive nature towards that end of it...and I conceded as much in the post. It is but my testimonial as an oposing view to the concept of SEO meeting it's final hour ;0) - and as you can see, IMHO it's alive and well.
thanks for pointing out a lot of interesting links and papers, the HTMM is one of those :)
YW - and yes, I noticed the HTTM stuff when mentioned on a Google blog... another interesting approach for sure. Glad you found a few nuggets within the madness.
So when does the next PageRank update take place? Just kidding, hehe.
SEO is a diverse field that involves significant subjective thinking and flexibility. As such, it may seem to be closer to an art than a science because of the creativity and leeway involved. However, with the subjectivity in decision making comes objectivity in analysis. Thus some may also contend that it does resemble a science because it involves analysing lots of variables.
he.. he ... now now Tad... it's a ToolBar PageRank export right? Cause a 'PageRank update' implies a tweak of the actual algo.... right? hee hee
