Of course SEO is a service, but only because our industry has made it one.

if it is a service - is it a technical service or a marketing service? Why do we SEO? I think that many people forget that the purpose is to increase awareness, exposure and last but not least revenue.

It's a marketing service. No different really, in terms of tangibleness from many marketing type services.

But I do agree with the article in that you can't sell a one-size-fits-all package for SEO. And we do have those calls where we tell them we really don't know what we can do for them and what it will cost until we get started.

It really does help when the client is willing to pay for a site audit to start. It's basically mandatory as part of our services.
