Eric Ward writes, "As link builders, one challenge we all have is showing our clients evidence that our work is having the effect we said it would. What would make this part of the process easier is if there was one single universal tool that could identify every single instance when a site is mentioned, linked, tagged, tweeted, or feeded."

I use RSS monitor loads of social media sites (FriendFeed, Twitter, Digg, del.icio.us) and grab RSS feeds from the big 3 search engines. Then I use Google Reader to join all these feeds together into one big firehose. More details here.I monitor the firehose via Twitter but as Google documents can import RSS feeds, I bet that would be a great way to automate those link-building status reports.
