Maybe doing a blog entry and posting that any news whether factual or not can be great linkbait!
Sphinn the hype then facts don't matter.

undoing an old mistake, much too late. If they replace it with "jump thru hoops" I bet sales of hula hoops would go thru the roof.
If we assume that it's Google's mission to catalogue all of mankind's information in some discernable way -- then maybe directories should be a 'specific search'. Google should place a DIRECTORY link at the top of Google along side IMAGES, NEWS, SHOPPING and GMAIL. Why?
Think about it this way.
Say you walk into your local library looking for a book on 'Nutrition for Cancer Patients'. The library catalogue computer tells you to go to section 600, row 7B. But when you get there entire shelf is filled with reference books pointing to other sections of the libraries.
If I want 'references' - then I will browse the reference section. But I don't want 'references'...
I want RESULTS.
I imagine this could also give Google a valid reason to crush their Ad Words competition without being preceived as 'Evil'.
This will also give Google an opprotunity to get rid of all the spammy, useless directory sites that create directories for the sole purpose of running Ad Sense programs.
....or.... people might have missed...that by them recommending getting listed in the yahoo directory meant that they were recommeding buying a link.
(me thinks that's the real reason for that removal)
heh Jim, only like 3 or 4 years too late!
I think it's just about time to change some old methods with new ones...those that are more effective.
Spot on Jill & Jim.
Yeah I think the paid link hypocracy is part of it, but it might also have to do with the fact that oficially recommending lining the pockets of your competitor to the tune of $300 per website, per year, isn't the best business decision either...

@fathom
I'm not sure how you can say this isn't news or factual but, to each his own. Try using the correct URL and not the UK version you mention in your post. Just so you know this, removal has been confirmed by dozens of folks including JohnMu:

Since the days of Web 1.0, online directories have provided countless marketers with a cost-effective foundation for their online lead generation campaigns. How times have changed but today's organized, human-edited Web 2.0 directories have become more niche-oriented and with strong social media applications they're making a comeback, big time.
