As previously mentioned in part 1 of this series, it’s extremely important to be able to evaluate the power of a directory for link building. Especially when you consider that the power of a directory listing is much more complicated than just looking at the PR of the directory homepage.

Hence, the goal of this post is to train the average SEO enthusiast how to quickly and effectively evaluate the power of general directories through link analysis and evaluation. The post is going to focus on the power of general directories because they are much more prevalent than niche directories; which obviously are powerful if your in the same niche. At the end of the day, there are hundreds of directories (both paid and free) that you can submit too, so you need to know how to quickly evaluate the power of these directories in order to make the most out of your time and money. Efficiency is key!

Good steps to go through when checking up on directories. Found an error on one of my own after going through the process.

Directories are becoming more and more invaluable. There have been so many started up that are only ever created for Adsense purposes and three-way linking scams it’s pretty difficult to even find decent ones if your not so savvy. It’s great to get a link back from DMOZ but expect to wait about a year for it. The DMOZ directory is awful by today’s standard. Some good tips there nonetheless.

I think the take away here is that directories are the low hanging fruit of link acquisition.  They should constitute a small % of your back links and you should only be in high quality directories and should avoid free directories for the most part (DMOZ notwithstanding).  You can still get your way to the top on just directory links, but going forward, it is harder and harder to look at directories alone as a long term SEO strategy.  Blogging is the most effective link building tool in my opinion that is scalable across all business models.

I think phpld based directories and directories which can be set up in < 30 minutes with zero moderation and free listing are pretty useless. The time has come for directory owners to think of outside the box.
