Great article, for me the economy going down the toilet has done nothing but help my business grow since everyone is pulling out of traditional advertising and going to the web.

It’s going to be interesting - I think there are going to be a lot more small sites looking for SEO/SEM help, but I also think the competition for high value keywords is going to go through the roof as the number of competitors increases.

if 30% of all traffic is local search, and times are tough I think a lot of small business owners are going to finally get real about their websites. Local results will also get more competitive as larger corps try and conduct bulk submissions and fill up the 10 and 3 pack results.

My bet is that we are going to see the bulk submission thing recede as smbs take more control of their domains.  On the flip side the bigger aggregation sites that have profile pages that act as the de facto website of the SMB will continue to show up in these results.

Be careful that as you take on more SMB clients that you don’t let them get past 30 days overdue.  While they may not be dependent upon the availability of global credit, their customers and suppliers will be, and that could trickle down to you if things get too far out of hand.

Agreed, many SMB’s are hurting for more leads... Additionally, traditional advertisers don’t plan on cutting down on online marketing - not when there’s positive ROI. Unless the whole economy goes down the tubes, online marketing is probably the best place to be right now.

LtDraper, that’s an EXCELLENT comment.  I’m so glad that Sarah Bird of SEOmoz straightened me out on my standard contract a couple of weeks ago.  Luckily, knock on wood, fingers x-ed, etc., I’ve not had a problem collecting from any of my clients so far but that is not a road I want to risk going down :)
