You probably heard last week about the ACCC* taking the Trading Post and Google to Court in Australia. While people might scoff at the suggestion that Google don’t adequately distinguish between organic and paid searches, there’s one thing to consider. We can’t fall into the trap of assuming that our experience of the internet is the same as everybody else’s (or even the majority).

What does “Sponsored Links” even mean?

ACCC = Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. An independent Australian government authority that aims to protect the rights of fair trade. Background for those not from Australia.

It's also worth noting that Australia is heading for an election and the ACCC has been drawn into the spotlight on several occasions with calls for more power to be allocated. ACCC is also on a bit of a winning streak with it's court cases so it will be very interesting to watch.

It's also interesting to see the courts defining the online environment just like back in december see: http://searchengineland.com/061219-092336.php
