Sphinn Home » Google AdWords
Whether Google intends it not, a lot of newbies think you can just type in some phrases and AdWords will figure it all out for you.

I [Brian Carter] love Google and they do a great job of getting people to try AdWords. But part of that is making them think it's going to be simpler than it really is.

Yep, sound advice that never gets old. If anything it just gets more and more relevant.

This keyword research, development and how you structure them are definitely tasks that need to be done right from the get go to avoid costly mistakes. And to avoid people blaming Google for taking their money and being evil.

Saying Google is evil for this reason is like saying BMW is evil because you bought one of their cars and crashed it when you didn't have a license to drive in the first place!

Great article - I find myself explaining all of the time the fact that Google makes everything sound neat and easy - just easy enough to generate them some more revenue. Even in the preparation for the Google Adwords exam they give you just enough information to know how the pieces move, without any focus on how to make it successful and how to avoid turning your Adwords account into a money vac.

Agree on that Eric. I was all about the Adwords certification until I started reviewing the material they provide and realized that all they do is teach you how to setup an account and spend money.

I took the AdWords test twice, once several years back, and then more recently for our AdWords Company qualification, and I was disappointed in it- it only ensures you know how to use AdWords, it emphasizes obscure aspects of AdWords that you literally may never use, and some of the questions had errors (referring to a missing table, for example).

Anyone who has the AdWords qualification is really only competent to use the system, not necessarily competent to optimize successfully.  I'd prefer to see them test your ability to optimize in real world situations.

So people who want to hire an AdWords person really need to look for someone with experience and happy clients.

Great advice to keep in mind - no matter who the client is!
