The big sites hit a certain critical mass where the little fish in a big pond gets eaten.  The verticals are where it's at.  The lesser known sites bring in a lot of traffic when you hit the right ones.  And the verticl-er they are the better in many cases.

Chris, thanks for the article.  To help writers on GZYN, I was writing an article on 'how to promote articles to maximize readership'. One of the key aspects was leveraging social networks and bookmarking sites. Given the vast number of such sites I wanted my writers to focus on sites that were relevant to the topics of their articles. Your article nailed it and it was right on time.
