Barry raises an interesting question to search marketers: How do you imagine a world without Google and where do you see yourself in such a hypothetical world?

Thanks for sphinning this, Xurxo.  To be frank, it's the introduction to a line of thinking that I haven't yet completed.  My hypothesis is that if you figure out how to do online marketing well without involving search engines, then leveraging that with search engines may lead to more powerful ways or different ways of rounding out your marketing arsenal. It's a line for brainstorming at present.

This is a fascinating topic.  I am almost ready t launch a website that will not depend on SEO (ironic, considering SEO is what I know best!).  I suspect that eventually the site wil do well in the search engines, but so far I have not even turned my attention to title tags, which is way down on my list of priorities.

Barry, I like your thinking - going a little outside of the box can go a long way sometimes. I guess that's why there's been a lot more focus on social networks and word of mouth marketing. These are already great complements to search engine marketing that haven't been completely tapped into yet.

The potential for greater marketing performance from social networks is still out there given that proportionately few businesses are using them today.

To follow up, I've finally picked up the Cluetrain Manifesto from off my bookshelf where it's been sitting for the last couple of years and started reading it. It might offer some insights into where the internet is going - with or without Google.

You can actually read the book online for free if you haven't had a chance to check it out yet:

Definitely worth a look since it's still very relevant today, perhaps even more so than when it was put together back in 1999 as more of a visionary work.

As someone who remembers the internet pre-Google I guess that it wouldn't be the end of the world if they went away. The vacuum would probably leave a hole to be filled by an array of different services and sites. Marketing strategies such as creating compelling content and working actively to get other sites to link to your content would still be as valid.

An SEO would need to understand a wider array of systems and think more about how "the internet" actually works.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more it makes me think that the basic work on a site would stay much the same. It's the Google-centric areas such as chasing the algorithm or looking at AdWords campaigns that would change focus most.

A world without Google is a world dominated by the other major search engine, Yahoo. Of course, you'd also see an increased market share for Live.
