Can an SEO only shop grow to be a major player? I'd love to hear of one that has.

I don't know the answer, but I'm interested in what others have to say on the topic.

The problem with this question is that SEO as we know it is destined to be obsolete. Optimizing various data and media formats as well as ongoing promotion (not just link building) is what will characterize successful "SEO if you want to call them that" shops in the future.

I don't see why those kinds of organizations can't achieve major player status just like the large management and IT consulting firms have. A combination of software, process and brain power consulting.

What you are talking about, toprank, is what I would consider a full service digital agency. I agree with you to an extent, but is there room for the niche firm that ONLY concentrates on organic search strategies to become a major player? Perhaps this just a hypothetical because once a search only agency gets beyond a certain point they all tend to start offering other services (albeit usually ineptly at first) so it may never happen. But I just wonder if it is possible like you say, for an SEO shop to become like the big management and IT consulting firms.
