very comprehensive analysis of Xenu Link
I was using it for just to check broken links. I will be using it to do some internal linking analysis. Great tips, worth the read.
XENU Link Sleuth is actually kind of lame and "sleuth" shouldnt even be in the name.It misses a bunch of stuff such as:- Soft 404s on hosting companies and control panels that return a 200 for "Site no longer available" and are only detectable by title, page content or page name. I have over 300 profiles of these types of pages I scan, its a big list.- Sites that have changed ownership now in domain parks, porn or worse. I have a couple of hundred profiles of these types of sites too.- Sites that have been infected with thousands of BH links, malware or worse. I have about 100 profiles of the various types of links and scripts on these sites, not nearly enough. And a few other things, many which could be affecting how your page(s) or even site is being ranked because of the junk youre linking out to that the Link Sleuth doesnt sleuth at all.
Hey Bill, youre spot on with those observations and to add to the list, Xenu does not obey robots.txt. Thanks for coming on and pointing these things out. If the comments section was all backslaps sans analysis then this place would be DULL. So thanks for keeping things lively and informed. :)However to be fair, this article was about what Xenu CAN do, not what it CANT do. The article has some good tips in there about this old school app. Its an oldie but a goodie. Good stuff.
Lame maybe, but definitely worth using until something better comes along.Xenu defintely has problems and requires that you setup the options correctly.I did notice a bunch of those columns during my last bout with Xenu. Will have to take another look at some of the options that were pointed out in the article.Hey, maybe SEOmoz is using Xenu? With Xenu, can I spy on you?
