A very thought-provoking article.  My read for the day (well one of them but you know what I mean. :) )

The same here: best read of the day. (And I almost skipped this post as I thought it would be just a list of advanced search operators...)

I struggled with how hard to hit the security angle and how much SEO content...so I split the difference. It started when talking to a forum member over there and realized many SEO enthusiasts didn’t have my addiction for playing with search operators... and a post was born. There are a few scary desktop apps out there I came across when researching...sufice it to say, SEO is the least of the purposes for advanced operators and Google Dorking... ;0)

Great post and I agree that using this stuff for SEO is really just the tip of the iceberg.

@Nick yea, figured it had been  while since there was a Google-Hacks post out there, so why not? It’s always entertaining to spend an evening playing with them to see what new ideas one can come up with... want some fun? Google the ’Goolag Scanner’ - a decidely nefarious toy ;0)@Hugo most def. the advanced operators/hacks have likely MORE uses to crackers and hackers than SEOs even... Oh, and want some fun? Find ones you like and set up some Google Alerts with the query... fresh and minty Dorking ;0)

Nice. I put together a search training pack for our company and it included lots of examples like these. Also try: [salary filetype:.xls site:.org] and also [salaries...]. Contact information/details are also good examples.Another thing is to get creative with keywords. The word [highly] is a good modifier (highly confidential, highly innovative, etc). And [press release] is another good one. What else can you think of?And don’t get me started on how useful this kind of searching is for social engineering.

I’m loving those hacks Dave, a couple of results really made me laugh, cheers for that.@ theGypsy, "crackers..." - in the UK crackers means crazy, which in that context makes even more sense!
