I have found that PR sculpting (and manipulating link reputation through internal linking) can be very advantageous on small sites, where's it's pretty quick and easy to do. Oh, but maybe we shouldn't tell anyone.

I have seen this to be most effective for e-commerce websites where the long tail push to product pages is key to serving relevant results and higher conversion rates.

What I don't understand is why some posts on Sphinn are nofollowed and others are not.

I typically lurk more than I post but I posted a story last night and it's nofollowed. I don't care one way or the other - the goal wasn't to gain any link juice - but I'm just curious why. What are the criteria?

I like the analogy that Michael makes here - he's right, in a "lipstick on a pig" sort of way i guess, but I do agree with @MaryBowling too, and applied after the fact to a small site with decent PR it can be a game changer.

Nofollow and page sculpting works - period, and to some degree it's become a habit even on a tiny 7 page site for my Mom's friend I NF'd the privacy policy. Why wouldn't I? But did it help, or will it down the road - I doubt it. It's a Gremlin.  However, It's not all that much time and effort either if you start it from the beginning of a site.

@fitz - New posts on Sphinn are nofollowed until they gain a certain level of popularity. i'm not sure if it's just reaching "hot" status, or going to the front page that removes NF, but it's supposed to prevent  spam submissions I think.

@paisley - I'd love to know more about sculpting without no follow. can you elaborate? ;)

@searchcommander - That makes sense. Thanks!
