How does Google make money from this service if they don’t charge you? I welcome rationalizations that they’re just doing it out of good community spirit.

Isn’t it because it is a way to get more sellable information about you and your company. That’s why it is free.

I think it’s free for two reasons.  It gives Google a way to collect tonnes of aggregate data about the web in general and particular markets or verticals. The second reason is a certain amount of community spirit, or enlightened self interest.  Google’s success is dependent upon the results it serves being relevant and useful to searchers.  So, they give webmasters the tools to make their sites as good as possible.  Webmasters are the ones who make the results, after all.

To expand upong nightcrawl’s comment about AdWords and AdSense ...In order for business owners to spend more money on Google AdWords, they need to see an increase in conversions and campaign performance (return on investment - ROI). For sites to perform/convert better to increase ROI, business owners and webmasters need analytics tools to optimize their website. Since many good web analytics tools were typically expensive before Google Analytics, Google has provided a tool free of charge to allow them to optimize their site. This tool works nicely with AdWords, which helps business owners begin to see a path for generating greater profits. Once an opportunity to gain is exposed, the decision is made to increase spending which equals more money for Google Adwords.
