A sad truth affecting more and more children: Loosing touch with reality and replacing it with the virtual one where all the 'virtual friends' are.
Thank GOD I had a beautiful childhood!

The writing in this post was a little hard to understand in places, but I appreciated the contents of it.

I agree - the Internet is not a playground for children. Children should be spending the majority of their time in an actual playground, with real people, interacting with others and learning about human relations...not human computer relations.

I often think that, like TV, the Internet is great when you are feeling too sick to go outside or be around other people. It can help you through a rough spot of enforced inactivity. Obiously, the Interent provides an important workplace, too. But, it can never replace the activity and experience of what humans have traditionally considered 'real' life: interacting with nature and the human family. The children who are growing up in this untraditional, new environment of virtual reality will become adults such as the world has never known before. I wonder how they will run things when it is their turn to be in charge.

Do keep in mind I'm not a native English speaker. I'm from far away and, indeed, the natives might have problems understanding parts of my message due to the translation process (that goes on deep in my mind) but as long as you got the big picture ... it's great:)

I'm not sure I want to be around when it will be their turn in charge. I think these kids are perfect material to be lead not to lead!

Interesting post, and completely agree.  Kids these days should be going outside to play with their friends, and not exactly making new "friends" online. (Hello, Dateline NBC's To Catch a Predator).

Like most things in life, if things are kept in moderation (i.e. going online) in a supervised parental environment, then going online for research for homework, communicating with their "real life" friends through IM, then that's completely fine.

IMO, the internet should not be a substitute of their human interactivity of other children.
