yes Rand! great post :) We have long thought that results for SEO query were very strange and full of spammy content.
Sorry I didnt feel this was a good post. I appreciate the point Rand is making but dont think the company mentioned got a fair deal here. Its a pity the same point could not have been made without reference to a real business. As far as I can tell their only crime was obtaining low quality (directory + link page) IBLs and concentrating their anchor text too much. Is that now considered "Blackhat"? This post is placed within the "Spamming & Black Hat" section of the Moz blog so I guess that answers my question. Im also intrigued by the use of Linkscape to build the case against this company. I can understand how this will help to sell the tool but it undermines the argument that it cant be used competively against sites. Id suggest this use of Linkscape might make even more people ban the bot but thats just me. Edit: Pat (WeBuildPages) put in an excellent comment there. That is the kind of discussion that would have been useful. Im not sure we needed the specific site example to have it.
I agree with Nick here. You can discuss the issues without having to call out a company for doing it. Google always argues that it deals with issues like these algorithmically, so singling out a single company rather than the issues doesnt help anybody.
To clarify:I think the pointing out of the obvious and methodical gaming with examples was good to post on.The ethical issues of "calling people out"...well, I understand why people feel the need to do it, I just dont think it ever really helps, myself.
I dont think the company in question did enough to deserve this outing. I wish the point had been made without reference to a real site.
outing sites, especially ones that could be considered competitors, looks pretty tacky. Nice plug for your tool and friends though...
As I already commented on the original thread, its a shame to see a site getting outed for giving Google what they want and its not really fair play.
Nothing more than promotion of mozs commercial tool coupled with an attempt to sabotage a competitors rankings.
