I am a frequent builder and user of online carts. The fact is, the more questions you ask, the more likely you are to lose your potential customer before they click the “submit order” button. I have listed items that are surely going to bring down your shopping cart conversion rate and up your abandonment rate:

That was a pretty informative list, however, personal experiences would also include the use of scripting e.g. javascript. Try to use as little as possible and if you do happen to develop an e-commerce solution that uses alot, always prepare an alternative solution should the user visit your shopping cart with javascript disabled... it baffles me why alot of carts don’t impliment this sort of feature. It’s almost as bad as not implimenting W3C validation. The world is a broad place and we should be allowing as many users as possible to be able to successfully purchase from your website.
