Interesting thoughts about the language and tactics of analytics. I like the authors style but I kind of wish he would have slimmed down his message a bit. Hes got some dupe content issues. Even though I was really interested in the subject matter I found my "engagement" fading in and out. Still a worthwhile read.
If I add a video to my landing page, is my goal increased engagement, increased time spent on site, or getting my message across to increase conversions (a download, sale, form completion, etc.). I agree with the article, give me an objective, define how well measure it, employ the tactics, and call it what it is.
I love this line "Few people understand what you mean when you say “engagement”, and even fewer can then translate it to apply to their sites." because it was at that point I gave up because he hadnt given me his definition of engagement yet.So I did some research and stumbled onto:http://www.webanalyticsdemystified.com/weblog/2006/12/how-do-you-calculate-engagement-part-i.htmlWhich atleast tries to define the metric "engagement" and ultimately tells me why is such a useless metric. My definition:Engagement - "a metric you make up".Super.So Im at a loss ... this article was unfulfilling, but taught me something new... to sphinn or not to sphinn?
