"You don’t want the SEO equivalent of a check engine light. There’s reason site clinics are so popular at search engine conferences, people need to expert advice on how to fix things from time to time."

Here is a rebuttal article that argues for more information in the SEO industry:

While I like trying new things, I've learned who to trust in this industry. Graywolf is one of those people. I'll be avoiding this product.
Gamermk: I'd trust Graywolf too if I were you. However, not sure what avoiding information really buys you.
If you're an expert SEO (or have access to one), then that's the better path.
If not, then free tools like this one might help (and worst case, you can ignore the advice if you think it's wrong).

my issue isn't with providing free tools/info which I think is great. What bothers me is the context the information is provided in. How many of those 100,000 people thought they had just completed a "full seo site check", when in fact what they really got was a cursory glance of some technical aspects. The tool does some really nice things, it just needs to be framed more accurately with what it's actually doing. Don't give someone a complete clean bill of health scoring 99 out of a 100 when you only made sure they didn't have any crust in their eyes, mucas up their nose, and wax in their ears.
@dharmesh: Avoiding information buys me time.
dharmesh... please help me understand this.
I've used WG many times for many different sites, mostly just for fun to see what can be learned from it. I am just learning about SEO and do not by any means consider myself an expert. My field is graphic design and I am also the marketing director at www.DamascusHomes.com in Atlanta.
I've recently tested the site www.pawsandplaydaycare.com on the WG and have come back with 4 different scores in just 2 days, using the EXACT same search criteria. It started at 12. I did a few things, some link building etc. and got it to 40, then the next day it was 72. My most recent score is now a 21. Can you explain the inconsistencies?
In fact, the responses to my score as to why I received the grade that I did never changed. Just the score?
Thanks,
KW
P.S. My amatuer SEO has done something right. I am in the top 3 pages for most of my keywords and phrases for the doggie daycare. I will admit that they aren't as extremely competive as the keywords that we use for the builder I work for, but there is a bit of competition going on.
Thanks,
KW
TheWebbMaster: We'd have to look into this. It's possible one of the third-party services we're querying to get data for the grading algorithm is down.
Grades are expected to change over time (as more websites get graded), but not this much so quickly.
