Dave Snyder has a great post on SEP blog about using UGC (user Generated Content) to increase business.

Great post!

It could have been done a bit better, to be honest - not least because there are a lot of dumb readers out there who will focus too much on the "quantity" element as opposed to the "quality" element - and it’s the later that really makes UGC work beneficially within a marketing campaign. Also, maybe not too much of an issue in the USA, but in the UK, internet publishers are legally liable for UGC content - and as flamers are easily drawn to UGC, they can bring very real libel issues with them. I probably feel more strongly on the issue than some others beccause of my own wildly varying experiences with UGC.2c.

@ibrian as I said in the post, UGC has to go hand in hand with monitoring, via analytics and moderation. Of course you can’t let a person fly off the handle without a leash.Again the whole point of my opening was creativity and quality is important :Claiming content is important to success on the web is redundant. This cliche does not give people the tools to create content that is meaningful. Is meaningful content important?Yes!What good is content if it doesn’t lead to conversion? What good is your message if it is being submerged in your niche?I also tried to chose UGC concepts that focused on quality over quantity, such as incnetive based reviews and threaded video content, neither of which will get you a pile of smelly spam.I hope that clears up any concerns.Dave

It took less than two days from my comment to receive yet another legal notice regarding UGC on a site I admin. As usual, someone in a forum has complained about a company, and that company is claiming defammation. For those in the UK, UGC often does not offer any form of lazy win situation at all.
