Grab a coffee, in fact you might need a thermos as it is quite a long response to the apparent "public face" quality hit my site seems to have incurred over the last week.

I even reveal 2 links that send me over 3000 visitors per month between them, and are 100% legitimate.

Thanks for taking the time to write this Andy. Posts like this help others better understand how certain practices may be viewed in the eyes of Google.

Interesting, considering they created the market originally with the PR toolbar, as the post rightly points out.

Really interesting stuff, Andy - I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again - you not only know what you’re talking about, but you always manage to spin it into a compelling story. I’m liking your blog more and more every time I stop by :) Keep up the great work!

Andy, let me share a small tidbit I’ve only told a few about that may or may not have happened in your case.Sometime in June there was a massive shuffle on a niche in Google where I happen to have a fairly dominant site and almost everyone dropped a notch in PR except my site that moved up a notch. I don’t know what caused the shift but it was cataclysmic IMO that some sites dropped 1-2 PR points, the dominant leader dropped 1 point (I’m now ahead of him) and shortly after he was hit with a Google penalty.I have no clue what it all meant because we’re talking a bunch of sites affected and there was nothing in common that I could identify that would cause them all to slide down in PR whatsoever. However, much like your site, their ranking in the SERPs wasn’t always affected, sometimes they even did better, except the one 1 mentioned that got slapped with a penalty.Maybe you were caught up in something similar, hard to say.
