There is a very negative impression on web directories these days. Many webmasters and SEO firms are keeping safe distance from them. So, is the directory industry dead?

"Many webmasters think so. But I don’t go along with them – not because I am a directory owner – but because their views are simply immature."

Um... Yes, the web directory industry is pretty much dead.

It's essential to obtain quality inbound links, but honestly... I can count the amount of quality generalistic web directories on two hands. Ideal if you can find a niche directory in your market/industry, that would offer at least some value.

There are thousands of web directories in force now, all because people saw them as easy money. They are invaluable and anyone that pays to be listed in them are literally throwing their money away. These web directory templates are now even being distributed at discount rates because they are so worthless now.

There are some real good web directories out there, only ones that are maintained daily though and have a domain age of 5+ years. In my opinion, there is no future for general web directories, if you plan to start one up, concentrate on a niche market.

I'm only sphinning this article in the hope of encouraging further comments.

I had to laugh at the of the other articles on the blog which I only noticed after I made my original comment. Laughable, proves my point entirely.

No problem. But have you checked the date of that post? It was long time back and the market was not as bad then. Now that we all know the situation, it looks really odd - I must agree.
I also agree with you that one can count quality general directories with two hands.
