After the Paid Link Detector discovered by Fantomaster was proving to not be quite a replacement for Google’s current algorithm, we have another attempts to at least model a system that doesn’t create so many false positives.

While the post covers some serious points it is a light hearted sunday afternoon look at the issue of a "paid link" detector though I have given the subject some thought I think ultimately the key is simply to get a large empty computer case and paint it black marked PLD and then tell everyone how scary and accurate the case is, everyone will be so terrified they will never think to look in the box.

I liked the article, I liked the PLD too,  did you know that it also looks in your bank account too and can spot brown envelopes stuffed with cash...;)I think if you make such a thing then you can expect all the fun that comes with it. Linkbait idea of the week methinks !

You need to add more to the flow chart, though. Does the link show nofollow, for example -- you might nofollow non-Javascript delivered links, but human visitors might get them in JavaScript -- which the search engines won’t index. So are you checking without JavaScript on? And are the links running through a redirect to a robots.txt blocked destination? That’s another suggestion Google gives here: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66736

Well aparently linking to Matt Cutts’ blog from my SEO blog is either paid or suspect....LOL wonder which it is? Along with Technorati, and Bruce Clay’s blog...Oh my.This tool is dangerous...I can just see the reports rolling in to the big "G" now. Nice article Tim I hope many webmasters read it.

All seems like a marketing ploy to sell their own links package to me. TBH. What kind of processing power would one require to run such an algorithmn to detect a paid link/irrelevant link in software? Absolutely huge I would assume! Not feasable. Great article Mr Nash.

To decide if a link is related you need more than counting some features, on thing is sire using the nofollow relation or just a javascript snippet makes it neutral for the Google SERPs. Actually a bad thing, this way a lot of related link in blog posts are never recognized...
