With the appearance of several new niche social media sites is this the start of a new wave which will in turn lead to the decline of the larger more unfocused social media sites.

Will these "New wave niche social media sites" dominate the social media market?

Take a look at my in depth article explaining my own prediction, beliefs and a general outline of social media sites both generic and niche.

Great insight.  I started a list of other social voting sites like Digg and Sphinn myself.  Some other good ones are ballhype.com for sports, kirtsy for women (lol where’s the MAN site?)- There are others I haven’t reviewed yet.

Glad you enjoyed the site. Yeah its a good idea I think to get a detailed list of most of the popular social media sites. Something I might do myself I have been looking in to the amount of niche social media sites currently around because I know there is going to be an increase in them soon enough. It will be interesting to see what happens within the social media industry in the next several months.Thanks.

Willyboy, your article on your blog highlighted some good points. I would also like to ad that for the smaller niched based social networks, another advantage is not having to focus so much on the scalabilty factors the giants like Myspace and Facebook have to contend with. On the other hand, the larger social media sites have deep pocketbooks, significant market & mind share. So it’s probably just a drop in the bucket as to the amount of users that will totally migrate away from the larger scaled sites to the niched-based social media sites. I think it’s safe to say that for certain niches we will gradually start to see a rise in niched based social networks. Especially with the increasing availabilty of "Cloned Scripts" for purchase like Youtube clones, Myspace clones, etc. However, I think it’s safe to say that it’s one thing to buy a clone script, or piggyback of the Ning Network, add a logo and viola...you have a social network.... and it’s an entirely different beast to actually seperate yourself from the pack and stand out so that your social site stands out amongst all the others within your chosen niche and be around for the longhaul as they say. Then there is the challenge of generating traffic to your social site along with converting that traffic into registered users, but thats a whole other conversation in itself.I’ll give you a relevant link to check out, since in your blog post you mentioned the internet marketing niche. It’s actually an internet marketing social network that I spent about a year and a half developing. I just recently finished up enough of the coding and layout as to be able to open it up for registrations. As you’ll see, the old adage "if you build it they will come" definately does not apply, as I’m sure we are all aware of. Over time, and with enough effort on my part, I’m sure the site will develop a large enough user base to sustain and perpetuate itself...but that just takes time.Anyways, overall... good points in your article willyboy and nice blog. Here is the link to my site I mentioned above: Internet Marketing Social Network incase you’d like to check it out.Best Regards,Jason Counts
