Ya Brian, as we were talking about this earlier... My peeve was people touting to be a SMM because they know how to tweet and create a myspace page. whoopty doo! Social media is merely a tool to an overall marketing strategy.
Its the new snake oil and will only get worse in my opinion.
@UtahSEOpro But what if you know how to Twitter really really good? :)
Tell me about it! I have been at tech meeings all week and have spoken with people from PR firms who now do Twitter consulting... showing companies how to do direct messages and add followers on Twitter for big money. Making a Facebook page for the local water and sewer department, etc. Im not saying I am the Worlds best - or that these people have no expertise or value... but its the wild west for now. Theres gonna be a lot of confusion. My least favorite is when a "SMM expert" tells Joes Deli or the local HR Block franchise that Twitter is gonna tranform their business... and will create radical connections and relationships that customers have been longing to have with their corned beef provider and tax specialist - increasing business through the roof. Snake oil!
Theres nothing easier in the world to provide than TOTALLY BUNK SOCIAL marketing - that gets ZERO results.
these are the same people that Digg their own crappy stuff and say they know how to use Digg, but wonder why they never see any traffic from it.
Yea Brian, Id agree its the new snail oil as well.<div></div><div></div><div>I dont think I can count the # of people Ive seen calling themselves a guru with LESS twitter followers than me, less RSS subscribers, and less facebook friends. Its sad but everyone wants to be <i>known</i> but no one wants to know others. How can you be a social media guru, if you dont know others? I dont understand the logic in their minds. Is it just make money by lying, or deluding the truth, idk but there is no stopping it cause it would be difficult to enforce any laws. Until then, let the real Slim Shadys please stand up, please stand up. :D</div>
Everyone? Wow, thats a lot of people ;)
Good points, Brian. Catch 22 though. If youre not a social media expert UNTIL youve done what you say (made a boring topic marketable in SM), how do you get that experience? By getting clients and doing your best to make that happen. I suspect self-labeled SM gurus think theyll get more clients by calling themselves experts than by saying "I think I can pull it off." Thats not as honest, however... We have clients that are engaging us without having to call ourselves experts. I think its more realistic to say that the whole space is new, the strategies are still being figured out and tested- and heres what we think will work... are you willing to give that a shot?
Spot...on
In my opinion, you guys are the real snake oil salesmen. You are trying to make the whole process appear to be more difficult than it really is.
@Dorian, its not really difficult, so long as you put the hours in and have the right attitude.Whether its easy or not really depends on the kind of person you are.
Its about time we had a new snake oil. And since this one is even less technical than design, it should actually help the SEO industry as we SEO people start to look like geniuses again. Anyone else remember when designers refused to touch "code" ? Ill be happy to work with social media gurus from the PR world. Thats a nice fit, and they wont try and claim to be SEOs.
