As director of an advertising agency that manages social media campaigns, I was recently brainstorming recipes for social media success. Every formula I came up with included personality.

In Social Media, Personality is Key
You can be controversial, funny, or intellectually stimulating. "Bland" loses. "Unique" wins.

I actually think this line of thinking is what’s WRONG with social media. There are way too many folks these days trying to be Internet superstars instead of finding ways to be useful. Being successful in social media isn’t about finding ways to bring attention to yourself, it’s about finding ways to bring attention to others.  This looks like a list of how to be an attention whore and show everyone how cool you are. Success isn’t defined by personality, it’s defined by how much you bring to the table.

@lisa<div></div><div>Hmm. I agree but think your missing the point of the article. In context, I think Brian is in an ’older generation’ (no offense Brian) therefore he thinks things differently than you (and me) but both of you (lisa + brian) bring a whole picture to the pie of Social Media. I think many older people (seriously Brian, NO OFFENSE :D) are very resourceful and contribute to the industry but they (older people) tend to be dry and boring (no personality) and I think Brian’s goal was to talk to that community.</div><div></div><div></div><div>For example, If I’m just resourceful and contribute to a community that can only get you so far Lisa. It’s when the personal is real, genuine, and expresses a persona, the person can go even further to their fullest potential. I think your a great example of doing both. Your like a celebrity (that’s cause of your personality within your posts and outside too :D) among SEO’s but your respected because your very resourceful and add value to the community.</div><div></div><div></div><div>Also, on the other hand. If I emit my persona continually but I’m not resourceful and contributing to a community then I can easily be seen as ’an attention whore’. I think the perfect example of this is Chris Crocker with his mega-drama (personality) </div><div></div><div></div><div>So, I think personality has it’s part of Social Media but so does contributing quality content. To be truly successful, one needs a balance of both. :) [Follow Lisa’s great example, Seriously! :) ]</div>

Hmm. Maybe calling Brian ’old gen’ wasn’t the best terminology. Brian tends to cater to an older drier crowd. (Grr, trying to find words to describe my intentions/meaning but falling short!!) Maybe his own words are better trying to express what I mean "most questions I’ve heard about personality in SM for biz are from genx & older".  Source

I think there are some great tips in the article. But I don’t think Brian is very old (although I didn’t meet him in person, so maybe I’m wrong!)Some of us old foagies do get it though, Joshua!
