This is rapidly turning into shit-slinging.com here. Too many vested interests with much to lose.

I’m curious as to how I have a "vested interest" - I just don’t like seeing my friends or myself stereotyped.

It bugs me when people defend Backhat so vehimently but then claim they aren’t one.  But this debate will never end and I, too, have decided to try not to rant about one style vs. another or one person vs. another -- all this stuff is bad for the industry, both sides of it.

"I just don’t like seeing my friends or myself stereotyped."Rae, I thought you had thicker skin than that. I also don’t see any merit in lunging personal attacks at someone who just wrote her honest opinion. You can disagree with her without flaming the shit out of her. Did she single you out? Did she call you names? Nah she was making a general statement, which you could have shred to pieces without attacking the messanger.

@HalfdeckI do have thicker skin than that. I just tend to put ointment on my rashes fairly quickly in an effort to clear my mind and move on ;-)I did disagree with her, but it’s unfair to say that I could attack the statement without attacking the messenger. The "article" was op-ed... it was her - what I feel it was anyway - posting continually on a topic with her opinion, which is based on assumptions.  She didn’t single me out and she didn’t call me names directly, but I don’t think one needs to be personally affected by, again, what I feel are ignorant statements, promoting false beliefs about people via stereotypes in order to speak out about them. IMHO, there is a difference between a messenger of a fact or someone ELSE’s opinion and someone spreading misinformation via their own mouth and mind. My two cents.

Also, when a post is titled "[all of this type of people, whether I’ve met them or not, even though I have not met *every* one of them] are worthless, shady criminals" ... I think it’s a little unfair to say she didn’t earn a rebuttal... the level of "heat" in my response was based on the level of assumption, "above the rest" and disrespect she showed in her *own* column.

Rae, you are right -- it was an op-ed column, not an article. Perhaps I’ll label this better in the future (though it did have a column logo), but columns are often opinionated rather than news articles that tend to take a more factual stance.

I don’t think it’s destroying our business to have open debates about how we manage our trade. In fact, I think thats exactly the kind of openess and transparancy that will keep us alive for a long time. There is nothing wrong in having different oppinions about things - especially not since one of the most important things, to mee, we all seems to agree on - even rae and shari: We should be honest to clients! Now, isn’t that great?I think this is more important to most clients, and our trade in general, than if one break one Google rule or not. Search marketing is, like all marketing, a creative business and people will continue to be creative and do things differently. Thats the game. But as long as we can show that we are honest to clients I think we will do well. And, its the one thing that unite most, if not all, of us here
