I've heard many people claim this but it's hard to prove. I'm not sure the PageRank comparison counts due to the way Netscape links through to stories.
I'd like to see concrete stats on the traffic the two drive. I've certainly seen Netscape drive huge amounts of traffic. The two are hard to compare head to head because it's next to impossible to get the same story, to the same site, on the home page for both sites, at the same time of day and on the same day.
Perhaps a peak at some Hitwise data is in order!
you're right, it certainly isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. They are 2 very different communities with different rules. What flies with Digg may not work with Netscape and vice-versa. Influence is rewarded on both sides.
Hi Nowsourcing, glad you brought this up. Netscape is highly under rated not just from a SEM perspective but also from a user perspective. I enjoy the community there far more than digg for a number of reasons including a broader topic base and a more diverse community.
Unfortunately, from what I see, the SEM benefits in gaining links are still at digg. Digg appears to still hold the influential audience, although I'm hoping that changes!
Hey AussieRod, glad you enjoyed the post. You are correct that Netscape is severely underrated - and much is to blame on its prior image (as a browser / portal) - there are just many people that don't realize what a good resource it is.
While Digg may have an influential audience, it isn't growing the way it used to. I think that Netscape has more room to grow (let's say if it got a little more tech, opened API, added some more cool participation stuff, or just got the word out there better about how it's now social media) - what do you think?
Yep, totally agree. I'd also add that Digg appears to be working it's way into a niche that it may not escape whereas Netscape appears to be forging itself as a more natural reflection of broad and diverse online society thus more open to growth.
I like what their doing with newsquake too. Possibly Netscape needs to work on the quality of user submissions although as the community grows it may sort itself out which it may be doing, I see lots of user submissions being removed.
Glad you continued the conversation, AussieRod. I agree with your opinion about Digg pigeonholing itself in a niche whereas Netscape is just spreading its wings.
Newsquake is very nice in the sense that it is real news, and not just a blog about the site you're on and how great they are (although it wouldn't hurt for them to talk about their site updates a bit more on the Netscape blog).
As far as lots of submissions being removed, I'm not sure about this. Maybe you're speaking about potential TOS violation stories?
I am a big Netscape fan, I have had good success with getting my SEO stories to the 1st page of Gadgets and Tech, the guys on there are friendly and mostly mature, Netscape wins for SEO sites.
Thanks for your comment, Eavesy. Glad to hear that you are a fan of Netscape as well. It's a very nice community developing over there. People are genuinely interested in SEO over there as well.
No probs. Iv'e added you to my exclusive list of friends at Netscape and list of people who I am stalking here.
nice - added you to my friends list as well. Appreciate the add to being stalked, although that would sound really weird and out of place anywhere else :)
While I for many reasons ( http://seo2.0.onreact.com/10-reasons-not-to-use-digg ) prefer Netscape to Digg, Netscape hasn't worked for me at all. While this above story was dugg by 21 people although I didn't want it (someone else submitted it) I couldn't get anybody on Netcspae to vote for it. Indeed I submitted 5 other stories to Netscape, of which one wasn't accepted by the system and all other 4 haven't gained a vote at all. They have been overlooked completely, nobody even clicked on them... Check the meager outcome here:
