Jason Calacanis wrote that social media optimization (SMO) is "the worst thing I’ve ever heard of". A quick look at Mahalo.com on Digg makes it seem like Mahalo.com is quite active with social media optimization. It's easy to say that "Anyone who hires an SMO firm is an idiot" when you have the knowledge and experience to do it inhouse.

"If Jason Calacanis Thinks that SMO Is B.S., Why Is Mahalo Gaming Digg?"

Excellent question...

His comments against SMO were a bit extreme -- but maybe he is just doing some SEO (link baiting).

:)

I'm not sure if all those profiles are from Mahalo, but the pattern looks suspicious especially the one Digg friend who submits Mahalo content almost exclusively.

My BS meter pins the endstop whenever Calcanis appears on the scene.

As I pointed out a while ago, and especially in the "4 SEOs" podcast with Jason, Mahalo wasn't going to get links because at the end of the day, Mahalo content wasn't diggable.

So Jason introduced "How to" content

Is it gaming, or does jason just play the game like the rest of us? He has a fair number of employees (40+) and all those people in the Greenhouse, plus he uses Twitter and his blog to announce new content.

That sounds like the tactics used by most Social Media Marketing experts.

I think it is funny that Jason is being invited to keynote at Affiliate Summit. He will learn how to identify all the hundreds of thin affiliate sites he has listed in Mahalo.

I used the word "gaming" because that is what Jason called "social media optimization".

He also said, "Anyone who hires an SMO firm is an idiot."

But he has the knowledge and experience to pull off those techniques himself...

Good question. I guess hiring a firm to do SMO is stupid when he has so many people in house working on it...

Hey, that's Web 3.0, baby!

If he has that many in-house experts working on it, why is it still so crap?

I don't think that anyone used the word "experts".

One of them went to the homepage "How to make sushi rice" but the rest look to have sucked big time. 1 out of more then 60 submissions is a bad shout. Throw enough shit at a wall and some of it is bound to stick.

Say what you want about Jason Calacanis, he's still a genius. He basically has the ability to get press whenever he wants to.

Let's leave the "genius" tag at home for now.  Stamping your feet for attention does not merit the bestowed title of genius.  Unless of course, you count likewise attention whores Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan as fellow geniuses.

Jason Calacanis can't sing or dance (course I guess you could say neither can they) and last time I checked he isn't a young hottie either. So you can't lump him in the category of "sex sells".
