To develop the Yahoo! Year in Review, their editors analyze search queries based upon a number of factors, including absolute volume and growth versus previous periods, to see which themes and trends bubble to the surface. Individual users and their search queries always remain anonymous.

Definitely a must read for marketers as some of these trends might just repeat in 2009 as well. Although it is not from Google, I think that the search data provided by most search engines covering Year 2008 will be almost the same.
