I like some of the ideas but a few a treading close or even over the line when it comes to whether Google considers them legit. Dave Airey just got in trouble for his recent contest that he designed to get links and I believe Matt Cutts has spoken recently about Wordpress Theme links being not so good.
Of course it's also how you do it: If you require people to link back obligatory even prescribing them the anchor text... you probably violate the Webmaster Guidelines. On the other hand if you give away a Ferrari people will link to you with "Ferrari for free" by themselves ;-)
Actually some good ideas onreact, and much more interesting than 10 bucks/mo sidebar links. Dan Thies just wrote a post separating anchor text from PageRank, so that you can shoot for more authority with a contest by focusing on gaining more link pop without worrying about anchor text.
You can rank higher by getting more pages indexed via higher authority and using laser-targeted internal anchor text.
Some really creative ideas. Just one issue: there was a lot of focus on PR and quantity when relevance and quality should always be sought. I know its difficult to mandate that in these cases, but maybe a more focused aproach to those tactics might help. For example, if you need links from SEO sites, create an SEO themed Wordpress template and those that setup SEO blogs will link back (both from interest and via footer links).
I fully agree. It's always difficult to cover everything in such overview posts, but the methods are of course to be used dilligently and fit best within the context of your site.
Anyone who listens to Matt Cutts and believes what he has to say should crawl up in a ball and revisit the nursery rhymes from their childhood.....
I'd love to see anyone write into an algorithm for it to devalue links based on design......
Wordpress links not so good????
more google lies from the puppet!!!!!!!!!
I think the title of this is very misleading. These aren't "paid links" at all. Most of these fall under "If you spend $$ to create something on your site of value, people will link to you for free." Of course! If web sites spend their money developing useful content (rather than spending it on paid links), everyone wins. This is exactly what Google wants every site to do. Brilliant!
