New websites have become a depressing topic for me, thanks to Seth I have a bit more motivation. Thanks for Sphinning this DoshDosh.
Ill take a "good enough website" along with some great SEO over a "great website" with little or no SEO any day.
planetc1 makes a great point. This article reminds me of the chicken or the egg syndrome one might have faced years ago when SEO was the red headed stepchild. When making basic site suggestions I would wind up talking to a designer and or general IT person and would be met with "Yeah, we cant change that those title tags because our system doesnt allow for a really quick and easy way to do it and besides, I am a tech guy (nothing to do with marketing), why would I care if the site shows up in a search engine? I am more concerned with how the site looks."Of course that was like 7 or so years ago and now everybody has SEO in mind, but ironically I am seeing the same issue with web analytics. IT team members asking "Why on earth would I want to tweak my site so that (insert web analytics package) can better sessionize my visitors? I can just always look at my log files for hits".I hate to give the non marketing IT people a bad name, but sometimes they just dont get it.
Of course just doing enough typically equates to poor long term performance.Just doing enough is giving your loved ones artifical food vs real foodJust good enough = a chevetteGoing to the max = a corvetteYou can drive both, but people will only notice the corvette when driving down the crowded highway of lifeYou can do just enough while I and others will be doing more than enough and rewarded well for such!
Great article! Its always fun to work with a designer to create a site that is new and changes the way people interact with the web, but for 99% of the sites that are just coming into existence - keep it simple!
