Tony Wright isn't naming any names, but he's been in contact with no less than 4 different SEOs who either work for an agency or an in-house marketing team that claim to make more than 6 figures on the side. He asks, "if you are making 6 figures in your spare time, what the hell are you doing going to the office every day? "

Maybe they work two jobs so they can learn what they need to to make money on their own. Or, maybe their home activity helps them do a better job at work. Interesting post.

RE: "Or, maybe their home activity helps them do a better job at work. Interesting post."

That is the sentiment of my employer. They offer SEO and Internet marketing to the hotel and hospitality industry. As long as I don't take such clients, they are perfectly fine with what I do with my time. They actually like it, feeling that the experience and "testing" without risking their clients is a benefit.

I make way more at home than I do at work, but I'm treated so well, I'm doing something I love, and I'm surrounded by other SEO's and like minded folks. I learn something constantly, be it at work or at home.

Well Bill I can tell U I ain't charging bucket loads of cash...ha ha ha... I would have to think for all the the top folks (as in any industry) prices will level off. When we started our web design company back in 1998, that service was over-priced in comparison to these days.

Maybe those SEOs have very expensive habits and they have to work the extra jobs just to keep their heads above water.

There are lots of reasons why someone would work "two jobs" LOL.

It would take a uniquely talented individual to be able to offer real value to their employer if they're so motivated to offer competing services on the side. And with that level of success.   In such situations, I wonder if the employer is getting scammed?

Most SEO folks I know try to do a little on the side as well as their "real job". I don't see anything wrong with as long as your side work is not interfering with or competing with your "real job". Most SEO's that I know like what they do and have fun doing it so they actually enjoy the extra work. Maybe they want to save up for retirement. Maybe they keep the "real job" for some security. Maybe they like it so much they want to do it all the time so they might as well make some extra money.

I suspect that most good SEOs are workaholics.

It's really good money and very hard to turn down, especially if you have the time. I doubt most people are making 6 figures though and keeping their day jobs; unless they're just really bad with money. If you made an "extra 100k" on top of your salary and invested well, you should be able to plan to get out of your job... unless you really love it.

@ PocketSEO - Agreed. My wife calls my laptop "the other woman".

Is there really such a think as making "too much money?"  How much, exactly, does the author believe is too much?

@ oldschool       " wife calls my laptop "the other woman"

This is both funny and not so funny.  Funny to an outsider, but it really rings true

Does that include the decimal points? :D

Workaholics is right! If you love your work - why not?

To really be at the top of your game, for one client or employer, it takes "two jobs" to do so.
1) Actual work @ day job and
2) Studying and keeping up with the industry such as reading Sphinn, SEL, SEW, SER, WMW, 350 other blogs, experimentation, etc.

Once 1 & 2 above are done, if ever, is there still time for side work (let alone a life or family or sleep)? Probably not - someone is getting short-changed.

I'm sure some folks get lucky occasionally (find a temporary, untapped niche or a bonus windfall) but from a sustained income level, I'm highly suspicious of many claims made regarding SEM income.

I don't offer SEO services "on-the-side", but I certainly use my SEO skills to drive traffic to my own projects. This effort is quite a different experience because half of working for someone else is making a case for why they need to do what you say they need to do. My personal SEO efforts are tend more to be about the technical-side and less about the people-side of things that is typical of agency/corporate life. Both types of experiences are enjoyable to me so I see no reason to stop either. In addition, going to an office to work for someone else instead of staying home working on my own stuff provides some financial security should either effort go sour.

This is a tricky one. On the one hand, as an employer, I want my employees focused on our clients and their websites, not having their minds on other projects. However, the more and varied sites that someone works on, the more experience and knowledge they gain, which can later be put to good use for our clients.

As long as the SEO practictioner can truly keep their own stuff to their own time after work and weekends, etc., then it's probably okay.
