This is awesome, Laura. Really great job. I find it strange that there are so many beginner SEOs! What happens after 1-2 years? Do they give up and move to other careers?
Thanks Tamar. You know, I was wondering about that. Could be that they lack staying power, they entered as a stop-gap or under the assumption of fast-easy money. Perhaps the barriers to making a successful SEO are too high, or the perceived or real returns are too low, or it could simply be that the discipline is still relatively new and only recently gaining more widespread exposure, recognition and thus demand. It could be that my sample was skewed towards those with less time in the business... Really good question. Sorry I dont have the answer.

@ Tamar From what Im seeing, the industry is growing extremely fast. You have tons of people that are being brought in as interns, and then just moving up. SEO/SEM is one that is still underserved, and is/will be exploding over the next 5-8 years. Most business owners - including CEOs havent really got the hang of how much ROI there is in search vs. other mediums.We dont have as many of our fancy metrics and rating out there like radio and TV / Print have, and people dont just "get" how many people are searching online...There are no college courses (Im a college dropout) on it, and standards are changing all too quickly, so it only makes sense that most of the people in it would be quite new.
