Twitter - the micro-blogging platform that few knew about a year ago has now gone mainstream with over 6 million users. Even major news outlets such as Fox News, CNN and others are using Twitter on a daily basis to get viewer reaction and create discussion around breaking stories and issues.

This leads me to question whether Twitter can be useful for business or is it simply an outlet to waste time and be counter-productive?

I’d give it a big resounding yes!I conducted a simple survey on twitter yesterday regarding flu season. The results were great and we got a nice post out of it that helps everyone in our market understand peoples thoughts on getting injected.

If the shoe fits. Definate yes. But it can be like driving past a car crash seeing corporates trying to take advantage of web 2.0 wrhen used with little purpose. The ’waste of time’ argument to emerging communication tools on the net has been pushed around for sometime. Who would argue now that IM is a time waster?I think using twitter, in itself, is a statement about what the brand is and what it repesents. I also tend to think social engagment is very similar to CSR particuarly in the importance of transparency. To sum up. Yeah, it definately can be.

Many corporate users are also utilising Twitter to get in touch with their stakeholders.
