For every business, email is helpful.  National businesses like Border's books send me discount offers, updates, you name it.  But for a local business it is ever more critical.  So many ways to apply it.  So many ways to enable the business owner to stay in touch with his/her customers, so much cheaper than snail mail.

I guess email is still alive and kicking, eh? Is it email 2.0? =)

Email generates the highest return on marketing investment for all our clients using email and that includes beating SEO. Marketing Sherpa's recent SEM Benchmark guide also has data to support this.

I get email from local businesses that is so useless it makes me cringe.  Far too much of an assumption that "because you're on my list, you want to buy my stuff and I don't need to try" attitude.  People still need to do a good job of selling, even to an in-house list.

Unfortunately self-serve email systems like Constant Contact and Vertical Response give highly unqualified marketers access to large numbers too easily.  If they'd just take the time to think about how people skim messages, eye-tracking's F-shaped pattern, and how to write a subject lines, campaigns would work so much better.

Just a little help from someone with experience would help SO much in these cases.
