I was wondering the same thing when I first heard that announcement! ;)
I really just dont understand why people in this industry continue to give him a platform to denigrate us... but thats just me.
I think someone who had something postiive and constructive to say would be far more beneficial to the attendees.
Ditto what TheSearchBuzz said. I rolled my eyes when I saw that. Its really time to stop rewarding people who are famous for being famous and start rewarding people who are out there in the trenches doing the manual labor. (Disclaimer: I was invited to speak at that conference but had to decline due to scheduling.)
Hi Jill: This is Peter Krasilovsky from the Kelsey Group. In answer to your query, SES has partnered with us on this years version of Interactive Local Media/SES Local in LA Nov. 28-30. The link is here: http://kelseygroup.com/ilm2007/index.aspKelsey is doing the "strategic" part of the show; SES is programming the "tactile" part of it. For those of you who dont know, it is actually a vert big, very important show for the local space, with about 600 people attending every year. The Kelsey Group started doing it in 1997. We always try to highlight the most pertinent topics and speakers. Weve certainly had our share of controversial people over the years. My assumption is that the comments above refer to Jason Calacanis, who is doing Mahalo? I personally asked Jason to speak, and I think well have a very interesting discussion. My question to the Sphinn community is... if Jason can invite his harshest critics to debate him on his own blog -- and they all seemed to have come and participated -- why cant we invite Jason to speak to our audience? We have put a lot of thought into our side of the program, and so have the SES people, on their side. Weve got a great lineup of 50+ speakers, and it is truly a diverse bunch. I hope everyone really loves it, and finds the entire event stimulating and valuable.
Peter: I would just ask how is Jason Calacanis relevant to the discussion being held the rest of the week. To my knowledge hes never participated in local marketing or local SEM and still isnt with Mahalo. And your link doesnt work. The end-of-sentence period broke it.
Hey Peter,Thanks for joining the conversation. I have the upmost respect for the Kelsey Group and as a research report fanatic, have always been a big fan of the research that the group puts out. However, Im really left scratching my head as to the relevance of that speaker to Local Online Marketing. Please help me understand this. If its a matter of having someone who isnt drinking the SEO Koolaid speak, Id rather hear Sean Bonner of Metroblogging who has said that some SEO is bullshit speak because at least his properties do rank well in local search results. (Disclaimer: I used to be a Metroblogger and am a huge fan of what Sean has done with building Metroblogging) BTW: Thanks for the info Jill and for writing the comment that brought Peter to the conversation.
Im sorry yall just dont get it, JC is totally an SEO, hes a closted one and one with a marketing focus instead of a programming/technical one. Like the man or not at the very least hes always got something interesting or entertaining to say.removes mod hat ..."strategic" and "tactile" in quotes yet? Holy cow dust off that bookmark to the web 2.0 bullshit generator ;-)http://emptybottle.org/bullshit/Excuse me while I go beta-test semantic podcasts and harness standards-compliant tagclouds while reinventing authentic blogospheres that facilitate me syndicating long-tail communities and capture rich-client mashups that share viral value
Well, pragmatically speaking, the choice of speaker seems to have turned off a significant portion of the potential attendees here. I suspect that is not good for business, eh?The working SEO/SEM is the back bone of local. And I dont mean just SES style local, but Kelsey style local. For example, I may be at Kelsey 07 and if I am it will be because a IYP/local player put me there, not because SES drew me there. See the connection? Kelseys market is already deep into SEO/SEM for local business, and Kelsey is recognizing that by partnering with SES this time - crossing over. Your audience is already SEO/SEM, because theyre already working the SERPs hard via SEO/SEM people, and those practitioners know this space best. They are saying this speaker is a mis-fit, non-representative as promoted. Theyll say the same to their clients (Kelseys audience). It wont reflect badly on the SEO/SEM nor SES, but Kelsey. For the record I have no interest either way... never met Jason Calcanis, never use Mahaloo, my clients dont even know what that is or who Jason is, and I will only be at Kelsey if someone asks me to go for them.
I have my positions on SEO and SEM, and I dont think they are the only opinions one could have. Im more than willing to discuss, debate, and talk about the issues with anyone at any time. Frankly, the "SEO is BS" quote was a throw away quote I gave at an SES years ago when someone asked me about Engadget ranking so high. I told them it was because Engadget had great content and we didnt focus on SEO--which is the truth. If you have great content and world knows it youll rank... the SEO/SES stuff is all secondary to having a great product.Thats the INTENT of my statements... of course, at the time I didnt even know the audience was full of SEOs!!! I never knew how many folks even worked in SEO until a year later when Danny brought up the quote for a second time and folks went crazy. That being said, Ive learned over the year that there are many good folks working in SEO in addition to all the slimey guys in bad suits promising the world if youll give them a $15,000 advance and sign a two year contract. :-)Im based in Los Angeles, so if folks want to have a discussion about the issue Im around...best j

Seriously?
LOL... Well Im in LA this week for work, Jason.... And ditto what DJLitten said.
Hi. It is Peter Krasilovsky from the Kelsey Group. It is great to see the passion in this community. I hope I can clarify a few things. Our events typically have senior level executives discussing (and debating) the next generation of local services and advertising. So we call that "strategic." SES events cover strategy too, but are best known for getting into the nitty gritty of search. So that is "tactical." It is a nice partnership that we have formed for this show. Were going to hear from people like Jake Winebaum, who runs RHDi; Allison Mnookin, who runs small business for Intuit; Jim Riesenbach, who runs Autobytel; Jen Dulski, who runs Yahoo Marketplace; Jay Harratti, who runs CitySearch; John Hanke, who is at Google Maps.. It goes on and on. It is quite a lineup. There are many, many viewpoints reflected on the podium. Here is the URL again – this time, without the typo: http://kelseygroup.com/ilm2007/index.asp Hopefully, Interactive Local Media/Local Search 2007 represents the true spectrum of what is happening in local online marketing circa 2007 and beyond. Why dont you all look at the lineup and then decide whether it is a valuable show for you to participate in. Thanks very much.
I really didnt know the SES event was full of SEOs... in fact, after I said it and folks growned I was like "are people in here SEOs?"I thought the SES event was folks who worked at search engines and advertisers... i never realized that SEO was a such a huge industry. I assumed it was just a couple of black hat firms doing their thing and poluting the indexes. All this being said, it is going to be a FUN fireside chat and I am going to pull no punches in my assement of the industry. If youve got an issue with me feel free to take me on at the event!!!:-)best j
Ill be there, and NOW will be sure not to miss Jason speak... Jeez, my suit does look loke crap... ;)
http://sphinn.com/story/9374#c12863 goes in my bookmark file under "Jason clarifies his SEO is bull statement." I listened to the Daily SearchCast recording of the original conversation, and I interpreted his remarks to be as he clarified in the comment above. Someone sphinn it as "Jason Calacanis says that SEO is not BS". :)Dang, even I got pulled into the JC-bait-o-sphere. Someone is a master at it. :)
Aw shucks, Matt. Youre a "I Want To Believe" guy, and this expose just appealed to your "I knew it wasnt evil!" perspective. We need more of that, so I for one am always glad to see you involved. Now if we could just get a little more of that "maybe it really wasnt bad intent" perspective over on the quality team... ;-)
