Just shows the power of social media when used correctly. $1million dollars may indeed be small beer as part of their overall sales figures but...hey when you consider that the lead gen cost of these was considerably lower than some other vehicle like PPC, then you begin to appreciate the value. Not only that, by using twitter in the way that it does, it also solidifies and enhances pre-existing relationships and enables them to tap into problems and opportunites as-they-happen. Have a shed load of old laptops to get rid of on the cheap, put out a half price laptop tweet. Net effect, laptops disappear. Someone bitching about a fault on a new product who so happens to have a degree of influence or following...simple, fix the problem and then some. net effect, rep enhanced, customer happy - followers will take note too.People like to bitch and complain more than they like to praise and applaud, facts like these are the road to rack and ruin of many a reputation. By enaging early and appropriately outcomes of having a damaging serp for your brand can be significantly reduced and addressed before they get a chance to take root and fester. As Michael tweeted elsewhere, I too am a little surprised at the relative low level of interest in whats happening here.
So, wait, $1 million in revenue, lets be generous and call that 25% margin (HA) for $250,0000 in margin, over 18 months for $12,000 a month. Not bad, but hardly earth shatterring. Also, the market is right. I bet something aimed at 40something housewves wouldnt be o productive. We are (still) in the "lets spread hype" phase of SM (and twitter espeically) and I am glad there are good news stories, but they arent THAT good - not yet, anyway.
"Dell reported quarterly sales of $15.16 billion, which dropped 3% from a year ago and missed analysts expectations of $16.21 billion, according to Thomson Reuters." Nov 2007. Mind you that is $15.16billion is in Quarterly Sales. Twitter is great, but Im not sure if it quite as good or has quite the commercial potential that some may feel it has. The author sure nails it on the head that twitter doesnt have a business model. Twitter has 2000 written on its forehead. Funny how the author sounds exctited that twitter sent back and forth coupons that resulted in revenue of 1million. If thats how much twitter did just think about how much Email did!
