You got yourself a real nice little website here. It sure would be a shame if some paid links for this nice site were to show up someplace less than reputable.

Hasn't this been discussed as a possible tactic for years?  I wonder: is raising this vague and undefined threat a way for the paid link community to protect itself?  To try to influence Google to accept paid links?  (Because we wouldn't want innocent sites punished, would we?)

I am so glad there is finally a chink in the paid link armor threatening enough that the brokers and sellers feel they should engage in this type of fear-mongering.  Like many SEOs, I would really like the paid link industry to die (even though I doubt it will.)

We've lent on a few people, and they're not going to link to you.
We may ask you to return the favor someday....

No wait....

Hush, Pietro - don't give it all away to people that aren't part of the family! :)

You would think that Google would have at least one evil, or at least coniving, person working for them that would stand up at these meetings and make these suggestions.. But then, if that person were truly evil he would keep him mouth shut and become a silent partner with some of the more agressive websites out there..

Has anyone actually successfully gotten a site's rankings removes by report that domain for buying / selling links?  With the exception of the Stanford Daily, I'm not aware of any.

a) It's probably too early to say.
b) Even if so, I'm not sure too many people would admit to doing so - not only due to concerns of what it may do to their own public image, but because such dealings are usually kept under wraps (probably by Google, too) to avoid all kinds of aggro.

I know google is penalizing link sellers, but I wasn't aware of link buyers being penalized. Any examples?

I've only ever seen commentary that Google will simply stop passing link love from a paid link if a paid link is discovered.  I'd be interested in reading something to the contrary.

Where's the documentation that having a link from a "bad" page (a site or page that has been penalized by the search engine) to a good page (a page on another site that has not been penalized) will result in any kind of penalization to the good page?

We all know that the reverse can potentially lead to a penalty, but intentionally sabotaging another site merely by linking to it? Color me hyper-skeptical. If it really worked that way for SEs, we'd all be doing it. (Wouldn't you rather spend your time buying links from spam and pr0n sites to tank your competitors than work on your own content?)
