It’s my opinion that the IYPs just don’t get Search and so far, they haven’t really wanted to. They are interested in only one thing-selling advertising. They need to get some smart search marketers on their teams and listen to them. Thanks, Chris for the great insight.

Having worked in the industry for quite some time I have to agree with Mary that they just don’t get search.  I have a story I’ll tell you both over a beer some time.As far as I’m concerned the Yellow Pages have 1 asset: their sales force.  Everything else is secondary and replicable.  I’ve been told for years that it’s the rich customer data that has value, but as you point out InfoUSA, Axciom and Localeze have been keying those data for long enough to have it down. It’s a darn shame too because each of them has bought some good search marketers.  The shame of it is they always saw it as a product and not a core strategy.

Chris, yet another fantastic article.  So nice to see someone with your experience with a truly unbiased look at where the YP’s are today.
