Thanks for all the sphinns people. Again Id like to thank everyone who contributed to this report. Weve covered 15 countries this year but hopefully well double that number for the 2008 release. I think it would be really useful for those interested in multilingual marketing to have easy access to in-depth statistics for each country.Interestingly for me, the report highlighted 5 countries where Google was not the market leader, and 8 countries out of the 15 had a local search engine in the second or third place. Although Google has a strong presence internationally they are by no means the only game in town.
Thanks Nick for pulling this together - it makes an excellent and very quick and easy to read summary - Im already referring to it myself... worth mentioning that Multilingual-Search is keen to find new editors too to expand the reach....
Great work and presentation Nick. Now we should really start working on the Multilingual SEO best practices workguide ;-)
Excellent Information.
Excellent job guys! Would love to have participated, but the last several months have been a rollercoaster.
@CarfeuYes I think a practical guide, answering some of the more common questions (such as preferred structure etc) per country would be interesting. Im taking a break for the next few weeks tho!@Woz Thanks - any chance youll be up for the Australia entry in 12 months time? :)@Marz - No problem at all, I think well be slightly better organised for the 2008 edition now everyone has an idea of what the report is (and what info I need to collect). I dont think I did the best job of explaining the idea this time round, as people seemed a bit surprised when they first saw it.
China:Est. Internet Users: 1.3mInternet penetration: 0.1%0.1% Internet penetration in China? Are you serious? Perhaps a decade ago.At last count (June 07) there were 162 million Chinese Internet users according to CNNIC. No offence Nick, but did your China correspondent send you data from 1997 by mistake?
That would be my fault not Davids, I was doing the maths on that section based on the population numbers from CIA.gov and the internet usage on Nationmaster.com (http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/int_use_percap-internet-users-per-capita#source). They seemed accurate for Russia and the other countries I work in. Ill amend the figure though as that is a more reliable source you have given me. As Im sure you understand, this was the first release but at least we now have a framework and I know the 2008 edition will be even better. The idea is that we have all the country statistics and commentary in one easy to access report, which should make multilingual marketing a much easier proposition for companies.
Completely understand Nick - not an easy job youve got there. Keep up the good work though, your report makes for really interesting reading. Like you say, its interesting to see there are a quite a few markets where Google doesnt dominate. And you can never know too much about the Estonian search market :)Glad the China information was useful to you.
Thanks Baiduyou - much appreciated. Ive already had quite a few people contact me for the 2008 edition though so keep an eye out for that. >And you can never know too much about the Estonian search market :)Yep I think we got an exclusive there :)
Good stuff. Thanks, Nick.
Glad you liked it RC.
Great job getting this out Nick. You deserve a break for sure. Thanks for the input baiduyou. In fact since the report was submitted theres been quite a bit of growth in China which still has one of the lowest penetrations rates in Asia other than India. Obviously that wont ever reach the levels of internet penetration of Korea or Japan but every 1% is 13 million more users. Will have more info from Asia in the next report where there are currently more than 450 million internet users yet an overall penetration rate of only 12%. Lotsa room for growth here.
How could I miss out on this story that long?
