The most obvious consequence of Google’s crusade against paid links will be the shift from an open economy to an underground link economy. While many (perhaps even most) sites currently selling links will stop in fear of retribution from Google, a great deal will simply join the underground. Link builders and SEOs will carefully and quietly build relationships with more sites and will buy link placement for their clients.

It’s ironic but sad that Jennifer’s conclusion - that Google is hurting small businesses with this no paid links move - can be echoed with Google’s PPC policy. For new keywords that few people bid on, Google automatically slaps on a low quality score, forcing high click prices for bidders. They will only lower that quality score to a reasonable bid level if the bidder continually is willing to pay the higher bids to "prove" to Google that they are legitimate. Big business can afford this - small businesses can’t.And frankly, now that I have written that, the irony of their dual thinking on this issue is far more hypocritical than any article I have seen yet:-Pay Per Click marketers have to pay Google to prove legitimacy-SEOs previously paid for links (to prove legitimacy, among other things) and are now getting penalized for itOnce again, Google sends the message that it’s OK for them to profit from a practice, but not OK for others, ESPECIALLY small businesses, the losers all around.
