I stumbled across this today, apparently this web developer was pissed about having to make more "SEO Changes" to his site ; hilarious!

Now how can someone create a site like that an not submit it to Digg or Reddit.Ah well, I will take potential front page stories like that any day ;)

Hmm ok so 2hrs 31min to go popular on Digg, about the same timeframe for Reddit I forgot to Stumble it straight away and someone else got there first, and so far only 4 saves on Delicious. Wouldn’t you expect it to go "hot" quicker on a site specializing in search marketing? (currently 16 sphinns)

Hehe - I don’t begrudge someone a good Stumble - that just gave my Digg and Reddit profiles a nice boost as they are sorely neglected.

Story currently has 2012 diggs.I’m not jealous at all.  My Digg and Reddit profiles don’t need any sort of boost**this could be a lie.

Unfortunately if you read the StuembleUpon reviews people use the page to express their negative views of SEO and not about Google forcing us to follow it’s rules.

Andy - glad you enjoyed the digg fodder... sadly my account there is well, more neglected than yours, so I’m pretty sure my post would have fallen into the abyss, but I’m glad the diggers found it has funny as I did, I sortof felt they would miss the joke. guess I was wrong as it hit the top of Digg, from what I hear from friends at Google the page is making it’s rounds internally with much laughter :Donreact: I found the comments on digg were interestingly posotive towards the satire to bad stumblers are more wholesome... Anyways, hilarious stuff, glad you all enjoyed it.

I know it’s meant as a joke, but it only took me a couple mouse-clicks to disagree. It starts out "First, add lots of cross-linking so the search engine knows what is relevant." Personally, I would have started out "First, make a great site." :)

I agree. In adding all that stuff, suddenly the site isn’t all that great... but so many people seem to fall into that trap.

@MattCutts - Argh!If you think that site was a joke then you don’t really understand what some of us go through. Some of us don’t want to violate your rules by paying for links... so either we violate your rules and do so (I don’t) or we spend time on our on-site optimization (while gaining links naturally over time)... Often, yes, that means you need to do things for search engines rather than for users like repeating words within links, titles, etc... you have to balance that with user experience, of course, but if the site is operating in a competitive environment it’s a must (assuming that your competitors are buying links and you aren’t)...Damn, I’d rather hear you express your appreciation for this person’s "joke" rather than consider it a joke outright - despite that it was certainly humorous... the truth often is.

thankfully Google is the king of the castle; they don’t have to slug it out, otherwise that’d be one ugly page!

:) :) Really funny!  People make the SEO such a cult, as if the goal is to optimize for search engines, but not obtain business by providing good service.  :) liked this a lot. Similar to this from Google webmaster tools: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291"Dear google.com, I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories...":) :)

A very old sphinn, but still timely.Google would not have to change at all.The sphinn actually should have read:  What would Google look like if it actually tried to follow all the crap advice being given out on Sphinn and other SEO blogs.Google is just perfect as it is.  High keyword density with a very low text word count.  The description is coming from DMOZ.  Sites with a lot of Googlebombing can basically do what ever they want to.

Ignoring Google is like ignoring the 500 lb gorilla in the room. I had a good laugh. But it’s true partly. Google is a gigantic web site. If it were just a reflection of itself in web form - it’s so darn big it would either be accepted in a big way by a search engine or rejected for being impossible to parse by the robot. Of course, this is hyperbole talk here. Kind of funny to see things in the inverse. The big guy turned into a small guy.

Are Google king of search because people prefer the search results, or because the homepage is free of clutter?

Avatar
from thesayregroup 1090 Days ago #

@jonbey, I think Google is popular because they can provide a clutter free system and also have the most relevant searches. I tried to use Yahoo the other day and got some weird results for even some slightly competitive keywords such as the website had nothing to do with what I searched for or the websites had a 301 redirect. I also think marketing and word of mouth plays a huge factor as it took many older people awhile to move away from msn and yahoo but once they do they like the clutter free theme better from what I have seen.
