This guy is a let down to the Search Engine Land team, very unprofessional post, this is one of them times when I could do with a bury button.
Eavesy, not sure what you mean. This is a good, accurate article.
I would hardly call submitting to directories a "dark linking art", I own a directory that got penalized and it is not a "nobody-visits-them-except-the-submitter" type of directory, I get at least two calls a week from poeple who say things like "I am ringing up for a car insurance quote, is this Churchill?" so i know that some poeple to find value in it and some businesses get business from it. I have yet to receive a call from someone who found me via dmoz.
The 1st comment I made was out of line, I guess I just got mad because I having my directory (that I have worked very hard on) penalized is bad enough without someone rubbing salt into the wound.
> Now, can we all try to agree on one core concept: It's Google's engine, they can do whatever the hell they want with it.
Yes, and can we also all agree that I can do whatever I want on my website and that Google never asked me before they came around and stole my content (cloaked, spoofed, paid-linked or whatever)?
Eric Ward is no doubt a great link builder for certain sites and companies but for others he is certainly not. He's ideas are so old fashion that its almost funny: "Make a great product and it will all come to you" ... The truth is, that a really bad product and a very good marketing campaign produce more profits than the other way around :)
>"Make a great product and it will all come to you"
Couldn't agree with you more about that comment Mikkel. In today's day and age, it's not like "Field of Dreams", marketers have to research and put a whole lot more effort into their strategies and know how, when and where to initiate the conversation that brings them to you, and just like you pointed out, doesn't matter if that product is bad or good. :)
